High Note: A Masterclass in Programming

In just two years, High Note has established itself as an anchor of Melbourne's music scene – proving a venue doesn’t need scale to be a big hitter, it just needs great instincts, even better speakers, and the guts to try new things.

Jack Rintoul, The A+ Team

Presenting: the fourth instalment in our video series looking at Australian hospitality benchmarks in the fields of service (Caretaker's Cottage), product (Tom McHugo's), design (Bob Hawke Beer & Leisure Centre) and, now, programming...

A trio of music industry lifers, a pair of speaker horns salvaged from the Sydney Opera House, a globally reaching digital radio station and a performance space that’s hosted club royalty, speed dating, live sound sculpting and one of Laraaji’s infamous laughing yoga sessions.

This is High Note, a bar and venue occupying two micro tenancies in the front of the century-old Northcote Theatre in Melbourne's inner north. Umut Turkeri (Hope Audio), Jamie Bennett (Crown Ruler) and James Clark (Bolster Group) have proven, in just two short years, that visionary programming, an invested relationship with your community and a DIY spirit can build a venue that is more than just a watering hole. A+ sat down with Umut and Elsie Lamb, head of programming at SkyLab Radio, for a conversation about conversation.
